What is a Chamber of Commerce?

Ever felt like your business is missing out on connections, opportunities, or insider info on local trends? That’s where a Chamber of Commerce comes in.
What is a Chamber of Commerce?
If you've ever searched for ways to grow your business, connect with other professionals, or stay informed on local economic trends, you’ve likely come across the term “Chamber of Commerce.” But what exactly is a Chamber of Commerce, and why does it matter for businesses and communities?
Defining a Chamber of Commerce
A Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization that advocates for businesses, fosters economic growth, and provides networking opportunities within a specific community or industry.
To put it in the style of Goose and Maverick from Top Gun, a Chamber of Commerce is your business’s wingman—helping you connect, grow, and stay informed in the local economy.
While many people assume all Chambers operate the same way, the reality is that each Chamber is unique, tailoring its programs and services to meet the needs of its members.
Common Misconceptions About Chambers of Commerce
Is a Chamber of Commerce Part of the Government?
No, Chambers of Commerce are independent organizations, typically structured as non-profits. They work alongside local, state, and federal governments to advocate for pro-business policies, but they are not government entities themselves.
Is a Chamber Responsible for Tourism?
Not always! While some Chambers do have tourism-related initiatives, others focus solely on business development. For example, in Austin, Minnesota, tourism is handled by our friends at Discover Austin, a separate organization. The Austin Area Chamber focuses on supporting businesses through networking, advocacy, and digital promotion.
Is the Chamber Responsible for Economic Development?
Like tourism, economic development efforts are sometimes managed by a Chamber of Commerce. Austin’s economic development efforts are led by the Development Corporation of Austin, an organization that is separate from the Chamber, but with whom we work closely.
How the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce Stands Out
Since our foundation in 1940, the Austin Area Chamber has changed a lot. We’ve adapted to the needs of our members using the tools and channels that simply weren’t available 85 years ago. Through our core mission of BUILD, PROMOTE, ADVOCATE, we go beyond traditional networking events and advocacy efforts. We’re dedicated to helping businesses thrive in an increasingly digital world while giving plenty of opportunities to network and grow IRL (in real life). Here’s how:
Digital Promotion for Highly Visible Local Presence
Our Chamber actively promotes member businesses through social media spotlights, email newsletters, and online business directories, ensuring our members get maximum visibility. For example, our latest video reels featuring our Chamber President not only bring smiles to faces, they showcase some of our awesome members in a playful manner.

Business Advocacy & Support - Having Our Voices Heard
We serve as the voice of business in Austin, advocating for policies that support economic growth. We also provide resources and educational workshops to help businesses navigate challenges and seize opportunities, for example, our recent Southern Minnesota listening session with state legislators to let lawmakers know how new laws are impacting local businesses. Plus, our monthly Voice of Business meetings serve as a bridge between local businesses and the goings-on at the local, state, and regional levels of government.

Networking & Community Connections
…and yes, we still do the in-person network events, like Business After Hours, our community pork chop feed. We also organize the Independence Day Parade on Main Street each year. Oh, but who can forget our popular Ladies Night Out event?
And Ribbon Cuttings - the Chamber Still Does Ribbon Cuttings, Right?
Of course! We love to welcome new members to the Chamber and new businesses to the area with our Ribbon Cuttings! As importantly, we are fortunate to have a fantastic group of volunteers (our Ambassadors) who go above and beyond to make these Ribbon Cutting events a spectacular way to show off local business!
